1. What is an ATS

Applicant tracking systems (ATS) is a software used by the Humen Resources department to manage all applicants who apply for a job. Over 90% of companies use ATS. The main goal of ATS is to make the life of HR managers and Recruiters easier.

2. How does it work?

When you apply for a job, your resume does not go directly to the HR department or the recruiter. Here, the applicant tracking system sorts all CVs it received for a given position and converts them into a standardized format. It also divides the resume into different sections like education, skills, languages, etc. These standardized CVs are then checked against the job description to decide which ones match and which ones don't.

Therefore you can get disqualified because of your resume's format. Studies have shown that 75% of applicants get rejected before a human eye has seen your resume.

If you like it or not, this reduces the amount of time a recruiter or hiring manager needs to spent to find out who fits best.

A resume tailored for the ATS is also well-formatted and easy to read for the human eye.

For example, if your resume summary looks like this: "A travel lover with the dream of exploring 195 countries with ten years of experience in the tourism industry. Good communication skills with good sales knowledge."

The ATS could extract:

And will try to match the requirements of the job description:

If your resume does not match the main requirement keywords, it will automatically disqualify. If it is a match, it is ready to be read by the Recruiter / Hiring Manager.

What you can do

If you create your resume, keep in mind that it will most likely go through an ATS. It is pretty similar to Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and using the right keywords to rank higher in the search. So try to use the right keywords in your resume. Read the job description carefully. The skills mentioned earlier in the job description are more relevant than the ones at the end. List only relevant information for the job you apply for. Too much noise will result in disqualification.

Try not to overcomplicate your design, especially if you can not make sure it can pass the ATS.
